Why you Need a Second Photographer for Your Wedding

In the world of wedding photography there is a debate that comes up when a bride and groom are looking for a photographer to photograph their wedding.

Does that photographer that you are thinking of hiring provide a second photographer to photograph your wedding?

Do you need to have two photographers to photograph your wedding?

Both of these questions are interrelated and very important. The bridal couple need to be comfortable with the answers to make one aspect of their wedding as stress free as possible.

Your research into this area..

..will help eliminate heart break down the road on this once in a lifetime event in your life.

In this blog post we will help to bring to light why we think it is the upmost importance of having two seasoned professional photographers photographing your wedding together.

Many people do not realize there are two main styles of photography when it comes to weddings.

Portraiture and Photojournalism

Traditional or contemporary portraiture is where wedding photography got its start.

For years people only hired a photographer to either come and set up and photograph portraits at the church or wedding ceremony location or would travel over to a photographer’s studio and have them taken.

As time went on people realized that there was so much more that they wanted to have recorded of the wedding. People would have friends and relatives take candid shots of all the rest of the wedding but as time went on people wanted more than that.

In the late 1980’s a few newspaper journalists actually started photographing a few weddings from a perspective of capturing all the true emotion of a wedding without setting up posed shots.

This is where wedding photojournalism got its start.

It is the art of professional candid photography with a plan. I plan to tell a story of that day from behind the scenes without interruption.

In those days..

…people would sometimes hire two different photographers and photograph their wedding from both perspectives. That was expensive and out of most people’s reach.

In the 1990’s a few photographers realized that bringing an assistant photographer to a wedding would enable them to capture more candid shots, but it did not really take hold until the early 2000’s.

That is when wedding photojournalism became serious. Why did it take so long?

One Main reason

The digital age in photography started. A professional photographer could take so many more images and not feel he was wasting film. A wedding photojournalist will take many times more photographs than the one photographing portraits. The ratio is 6-1 or more depending on the wedding.

Why such a big difference?

The portrait photographer is having to concentrate on gathering up people for the shot and then having them pose, much of the time without a camera in their hand.

The photojournalist is free to capture all the fun stuff swilling around on the edges or deep into the emotions.

The photography equipment is very different.

The portrait photographer will typically use one camera body with a second as a backup.

Their lens selection is usually a short zoom lens to cover slightly wide to normal perspective and then something a bit tighter for head and shoulders. Sometimes they will use a much wider lines if they trying to get some special effect.

Using a flash either on camera or off is a must even if its outside for a portrait photographer.

A wedding photojournalist will typically have two camera bodies around their neck at the same time with a third camera body as a backup.

One of the camera bodies will have a wide angle zoom and the other will have a very long zoom to capture images from a long way off. That long lens will reach in and capture emotions without anyone knowing.

A flash is not used most of the time because a good wedding photojournalist will want to use available or ambient light whenever possible.

Just the light that was lighting up the event. Nothing extra and distracting.

As you can see the two types of wedding photography are very different as well as the equipment that is being used.

One photographer can not do both at the same time and come away with quality images of either style. It is just not physically possible.

When we send out two photographers to a wedding, they are both seasoned pros and one is not an assistant. They both know how to photograph both types of photography but for that day and type of wedding they will decide together what style that one photographer will concentrate on.

At Beyond The Shutter Photography our photographers work very closely together and work seamlessly with each other many times communicating with each other without words.

There are also times both will shoot a photojournalist style because the portrait photographer is not posing people such as ceremony and reception images. In those cases, they photograph from a different perspective and opposite of each.

It’s amazing what the same exact image looks like being shot from a different direction.

These two photographs were taken at the same time. The top one was shot by the portrait photographer and the second was taken by the photojournalist.
